Gunman shoots five in US gym

At least five people are dead and up to 15 wounded after a gunman opened fire on a dance class in the United States.

US network CNN reports the shooting happened after the gunman walked into the fitness centre in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, switched off the lights and opened fire.

Authorities confirmed at least five people were dead, including the gunman.

A witness identified as Nicole told one network the attack happened when "a middle-aged white male walked into the class".

"He had a big gym bag … he looked out of place in a class full of women," she said.

Another witness said: "He got off a lot of shots."

"People everywhere were screaming — it was horrible."

Other witnesses reported seeing people running around inside the gym covered in blood.

Gym member Lauren Dooley told local newspaper the Post-Gazette she heard as many as 15 gunshots.

Around 30 women were believed to be taking part in the Latin dance class at the time.

Ambulances and police cars flooded into the area, which is part of a shopping centre.

At least nine people had been transported to hospitals near the scene, CNN reported.

One hospital representative told the channel that five women were being treated for multiple gunshot wounds and were in critical condition.

Bridgeville is about 20km southwest of Pittsburgh, a major city on the US east coast that was once at the centre of the US steel industry.
