Taranaki toll may be worst start to a year
TARANAKI’S road toll for the first two months of 2009 is the worst for 14 years – and possibly longer.

Craig Blinkhorne became the sixth person to die on Taranaki roads this year after he crashed his motorcycle near Mt Messenger yesterday.
Craig Blinkhorne, 34, of Rahotu, became the sixth person to die on the region’s roads this year after crashing his motorcycle about 6.55am yesterday, on State Highway 3 just north of Mt Messenger.
Taranaki Daily News road fatality records, going back to 1996, show the region has never had six deaths on the roads in the first two months of a year.
Police yesterday were unable to confirm whether it was the worst ever start to a year’s road toll.
Mr Blinkhorne’s death was a double tragedy for his family. His cousin Adam, 18, died in April 2005, after his car left SH3 just south of Te Kuiti.
Constable Daniel Walter, of Mokau, said Craig Blinkhorne was heading north and was riding alone.
Mr Walter said it appeared Mr Blinkhorne lost control on a moderate left hand bend – in wet conditions.
‘‘The motorcycle has slid out, crossed the centreline and the rider has slid into the ditch and collided with a concrete culvert,’’ he said.
Police had spoken to the driver of a car passed by Mr Blinkhorne not long before the crash, Mr Walter said. ‘‘We have spoken to a witness who said speed could well have been a factor.’’
Constable Jason Koch, road policing branch, said motorists needed to pay more attention when driving.
‘‘There seems to be a lot of complacency at the moment,’’ Mr Koch said.
Drivers needed to be mindful of the road conditions and what was going on around them, he said.
Mr Blinkhorne’s sister Tania, of Hawera, said Craig had a passion for motorcycles and had been riding all of his life.
‘‘You could hear his bike before you saw him coming,’’ she said.
The news of Mr Blinkhorne’s death had stunned the family.
‘‘I just went into total shock, I just can’t believe it,’’ Miss Blinkhorne said.
Mr Blinkhorne is the son of Stephen (Bodge) and the late Margie Blinkhorne and has two sisters Tania and Alice, who both live in Taranaki, and one brother Barry, who lives in Australia.
Miss Blinkhorne described her brother as a ‘‘gentle giant’’ who would be sadly missed by family and friends.
‘‘He was a beautiful person and a good mate to all of his friends.’’
Her brother worked as a truck driver and crane operator and was a volunteer fisheries officer, as well as being involved with the Cape Egmont Boat Club and had served in East Timor with the NZ Army.
Mr Blinkhorne was one of five people to die on the roads at the weekend.
Another motorcyclist, Sidney Brian Tyacke, 57, from Carterton, died when his motorcycle careered off Lake Ferry Rd, in south Wairarapa, at 5.45pm on Saturday. Police said initial inquiries suggested Mr Tyacke’s bike came off the road on the left-hand side, lost control on the grass verge and hit a power pole.
