NZ Newswire
February 24, 2012, 5:04 pm
A teenager has been awarded nearly $8000 compensation and lost wages after his boss fired him by text message.
Stephen Whalley was working as a trainee ranger for the Takou Were-te-Mokai Landcare Charitable Trust trapping and poisoning pests in Northland.
The 17-year-old was fired in a text exchange with trust manager Clinton Rameka, in which Mr Rameka swore at him and called him an "ungrateful bald head f**".
The Employment Relations Authority said, in a recent decision, Mr Rameka had not acted as a fair and reasonable employer, particularly given Mr Whalley's youth.
It ordered the trust to pay Mr Whalley about $5700 in lost wages, $2000 compensation for hurt and humiliation, and about $1570 to contribute to his costs. |
