System Admin VS Developer 请各位IT同行和前辈指教

先说下我的情况，在大学Computer Science Bachelor毕业，那会正是经济危机伊始，工作不好找，而且其实一开始完全没方向，有工作就成，然后就找了现在仍在做的这份 inhouse IT support+ system admin的工作，到现在近4年的时间了。

前段时间跟一些同学朋友交流，很多人是做developer的，首先有些工龄短的还要比我薪水高，有个前辈也是从developer做起，现在在某大型电信公司做testing contractor，年入10万且假期多多，不禁让我开始怀疑自己的职业前景。

诚然如果现在换一个有些规模企业的system admin，在薪水上应该不少于同等经验的developer，但从我所看到的情况，做developer之后的发展，似乎更加多样化，比如testing, project manager这种高薪职位通常是由developer做上去的。而system admin做到高级 似乎只有IT manager这一条路，或者向network engineer 方向发展。 尤其在现在的cloud computing的大势所趋下，新西兰的光纤网络也在几年内全部覆盖，以后或许留给system admin的空间越来越少，IT的管理也会越来越简化，5年以后是不是system已经不需要admin了呢？

从职业本身来说，system admin 尤其是inhouse的，总是无法得到充分的价值感，因为你是公司的cost，你的工作很大一部分是cut cost，而多数的developer是公司的中坚，是为公司赚钱的，在一个企业中被重视程度确实有差别。

再回到我本身，虽然读书阶段programming还不错，但是这么久没怎么用过，基本忘得差不多了，现在如果转行，无疑要从头再来，或许还比不过graduate，还要面对薪水的降低。而就个人兴趣来说，其实更喜欢system admin的工作，主要是不需要面对project的deadline，不太喜欢总工作在压力之下。

请各位IT同行、前辈多多赐教，职业的发展，现在我该怎么走呢？

PS. 这里讨论的仅限NZ的市场，不考虑其他国家，因为没有任何打算移居他地

SUPPORT是比较不被重视，但是如果经济不好的时候，公司没有项目的时候，你就是顶梁柱了。因为DEVELOPER一个两个都被裁员了。

谢谢，system admin很多时候会包含一些support工作，但是重点其实是server network virtualization这些方面，大企业的system admin应该会分的比较清楚，一般不会兼support工作吧

哦，我没仔细看你的帖子，因为我是做APPLICATION SUPPORT的，有时候我也有同感。 不过做DEVELOPER的话项目没有了，你还需要去另外找一个工作，SUPPORT就不会了。。。咱俩差不多在一个阶段找到工作的，我也是一直做到现在了。 偶尔应该跳跳槽，这样工资会涨得快点，其实要是做了4年你这个的职位工资也不会太低吧，我知道咱们这板里跟你职位一样的应该是80K +

有80k的肯定是linux vmware citrix方面的senior engineer了吧.....那要好好请教一下......我知道咱们上班族板块人才是很多.....

现在的公司只用到 MS的server 还有VMware，马上要上citrix， 有想法是考些证书，比如MCITP  CompTIA之类的，会不会对换工作有帮助呢？

sysadmin也是会涉及到programming的啊. 像Microsoft Dynamics系列的, 基本全得靠自己的双手啊.

只是一部分公司是靠卖软件/网页/插件赚钱吧？
要是以support为主的公司, 当然以support赚钱, support就是中坚, 你就不是cost了

我感觉还是看个人兴趣, 看楼主喜欢什么了.

看你发这个帖子, 可能是已经厌倦了sysadmin的生活, 想转dev了.

依我看来, 楼主先别急转, 可以换一家公司做一做.

如果楼主是两栖(sys+dev), 你可以专攻一样, 去找找consultant的工作.

请问linux unix应该如何入门呢，我现在的公司环境只有MS server，当然VMware是在Linux环境下，但是基本不需要linux下的维护和管理.....

其实我觉得只要是打工，啥行业都一样，都会厌倦，因为创造的价值难称为事业，都被剥削了，除非干到高管，能决定一个企业走向，才不那么容易厌倦吧

Personally i think that's where the problem is, most senior engineers doing support (whether it's Microsoft, VM, citrix, linux, network related) are all on more than 80k+ (total package, not base salary). If you want to get somewhere both career as well as $$$ wise, first thing you should do is probably join one of the IT integration company? (e.g. IBM, HP, Datacom, Gen-i, Datacraft etc).

I do agree that the starting pay for sys admin/support is generally lower compare to developer, but after 5-8 years or so, you should reach the same level as them though. For my first 5 years of IT career, i was 20-30K behind all my developer friends, i think i am now getting paid 20-40K above all my developer friends now though.

我感觉依你4年的experience 换一个公司也应该没啥问题 具体也得看你是做什么的 哪个方向 厨艺精到什么程度......

你可以现在VM下研究研究freepbx pfsense/Ipcop squid

学的是computer science, 是学的编程，但实在不想做编程，一看code就头疼。。。

现在的title是network engineer，在一个专门做网络的地方，也是做一些类似support的事。
我感觉专门做network的，大部分都是support吧
我们这边大部分人都算是做Support的，包括有MS的，unix/san的，DBA的，还有network的

Not sure what the best way is to list what i have done career wise previously, see if this helps or not then:

===1st Job - Title: Desktop Support===
Description: Everything from Teir1 - 3 support, i was the one having to answer phone from users, i was doing desktop support, i also administered about 20 different Microsoft servers (mail server, proxy server etc)
Period: 18months
Salary: 35k

===Senior System Engineer===
Description: Tier 3 support for two different customers for this role, main responsibility involve supporting 20-100 Microsoft servers (all sort)
Period: 18months
Salary: 38-43k

===Level 2 network security engineer===
Description: Tier 2 support for doing shift work, looking after 50+ firewalls, 200+ networking devices, 100+ servers of all sort (mail, proxy, content filtering, VPN, load balancer), 100+ corporate customers. this was the job that allow me to break out of just doing Microsoft support
Period: 13months
Salary: 48k

===Level 3 network security engineer===
Description: Tier 3 support for same stuff as above
Period: 18months
Salary: 63k

===Principal network security engineer===
Description: Tech Lead for same stuff as above, being the lead engineer allow me to be more project focus as well as starting to get involved with doing design etc
Period: 18months
Salary: 68-88k

=== Operation Manager===
Description: Setup new team, working with project to deploy 100million dollars deployment etc, defining requirements etc
Period: 24months
Salary: 100K+


=== Security Architect===
Description: project stuff
Period: 18 months
Salary: 100K+


=== Tech Lead===
Description: At the end i decide that i want to keep my hands dirty and miss all the hands on stuff, and i end up going back and work as a lead in operation again. :)
Period: Now
Salary: 100K+


Hope this help you understand how i got to where i am today, and NO sys admin/support is not a dead end job.

这也要看能力的吧.

比如, 当年和你一起做"1st Job - Title: Desktop Support==="的同事, 也不是人人都能做到公司的security architect 吧?
