An active front over Westland is heading northeast and is expected to pass over much of the North Island this afternoon. There will be heavy rain first, and a spell of severe gales.
Weatherwatch.co.nz head weather analyst Philip Duncan says winds are reaching 110km/hr on the hilltops around Wellington. Drivers in the capital are being warned about potentially dangerous conditions.
