General requirements for the grant of citizenship
Section 8(1) of the Citizenship Act 1977 provides six requirements that a person
must satisfy the Minister of Internal Affairs of to be eligible to be granted citizenship,
provided they are 16 years of age or over, are of full capacity, and they apply for
citizenship in the prescribed manner. The requirements that the person must satisfy
the Minister of are:
a) that they are entitled, in terms of the Immigration Act 2009, to be in
New Zealand indefinitely; and
b) that they were present in New Zealand with the right to remain
indefinitely:
i) for a minimum of 1,350 days in the five years preceding the
citizenship application; and
ii) for at least 240 days in each of those five years; and
c) that they are of good character; and
d) that they know the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship; and
e) that they have a sufficient knowledge of the English language; and
f) that they intend, if granted citizenship, to continue to live in New
Zealand or work overseas for an authorised organisation.
