Applications have been coming in from as far as Ireland for jobs at the yet to be completed Countdown supermarket in the Palmerston North suburb of Kelvin Grove.
The store is set to open toward the end of June and store manager Wayne Law, who will move from The Plaza location to the new site, said he had received more than 600 job applications.
"People were handing in applications six months in advance at the other stores, before we had even turned the dirt at the new store," he said.
About 130 people would work at the store, along with a pool of about 30 casuals.
Thirty people already working at the Feilding and Palmerston North Countdowns would transfer to the Kelvin Grove store to train new staff, which would free up roles at those existing sites, Mr Law said.
"We're creating about 100 or so new jobs in Palmerston North."
Mr Law said applicants hailed from as far south as Invercargill, as well as from the top of the North Island.
People were also applying from overseas, with one applicant from Ireland, he said.
The new staff would be trained at Palmerston North stores before the Kelvin Grove site opened.
An exact opening date had not been confirmed but Mr Law said it would be "mid or late June".
"We're all recruitment at the moment."
He said there would be a greater focus on green technology in the new supermarket, with more energy efficient lights, better insulation and heat recirculation from the fridges and freezers.
However, the basic layout would be similar to most other supermarkets.
"At the end of the day, it's still a supermarket."
There would be about 160 car parks at the 3200-square-metre store, as well as five retail stores attached to the building.
Mr Law said he expected the site to be popular, as there was no other major shopping area in Kelvin Grove. |
