I gonna have to disagree on this one. Not all New Zealand born Chinese speak at fast pace. Although I"m not exactly a kiwi-chinese, came here when I was 10, but my English is quite plain and steady. And that a lot of my mates (local chinese) speak rather slowly.
So I think this is a personal thing other than some sort of norm. When one choose to talk fast is not to disguise his or her identity, but more siutation dependent. For example, I tend to speak quite fast when I"m with a colleague coz we know exactly what we're talking about. And if it's client, I slow down considerably to comprehend and to convey ideas concinsely. |
