<Leviathan> by Thomas Hobbes - It argues for a social contract and rule by an absolute sovereign.
<Two Treatises of Government> by John Locke - The First Treatise attacks patriarchalism in the form of sentence-by-sentence refutation of Robert Filmer's Patriarcha, while the Second Treatise outlines Locke's ideas for a more civilized society based on natural rights and contract theory.
<The social contract: and, Discourses> by Jean-Jacques Rousseau - The Social Contract argued against the idea that monarchs were divinely empowered to legislate.
<John Stuart Mill on politics and society> by John Stuart Mill - Some of Mill’s most significant innovations to the utilitarian tradition concern his claims about the nature of happiness and the role of happiness in human motivation.
