Everyone will know the CEL (Check Engine Light) that comes on briefly when you start your car while the fuel pump primes. If this light comes on while the engine is running you know you have a problem. This article will give a step by step guide to diagnosing what is wrong by doing this simple ECU check.
The ECU in most modern Hondas is located in the passenger foot well behind a plastic cover. To get to the ECU you (obviously) need to remove the cover. The cover is pictured below. It is from a DC Integra and may differ a little for other models.
The cover is held on my a few bolty screwy things that are simple to locate and remove. Go ahead and do this.
Once removed you are looking for this green silicon wire holder thing with two blue plugs inserted into it.
Now, we are only concerned with the plug to the left of that pic with one black, and one brown wire coming out of it.
The next step is to pull that plug from the green silicon thing, this can be a little fiddly but be paitent.
As you can see the plug is now turned around and two holes can be seen.
The next step is to "bridge" the two wires with a paperclip or another peice of wire such as speaker wire. Paperclips are the easiest.
As you can see the wires now form a circuit.
The next part is simple. Go round and jump in the drivers seat with the keys in the ignition. Turn the key to the "on" position. (DON'T START THE CAR) You will now see the CEL flashing randomly.
You will notice there may be long and short flashes.
A long flash = 10 and a short flash = 1.
For example... .
LONG-LONG-LONG-SHORT = 31
SHORT-SHORT-SHORT=3
The code keeps repeating until you switch the ignition off.
