VUWSA says Sorry to Chinese Students

The Victoria University Students’ Association President, Joel Cosgrove today issued an apology to the Chinese community today, many of whom were offended by the cover of this weeks Salient.
Cosgrove said, “It is regrettable that this image of President, Hu Jintao, which in no way reflects the intention of the article was made the cover of Salient. Further, I am deeply sorry for the offense that this has caused to students and the wider Chinese community. But, I also support Salient’s ability to make critical comment of any administration.”
Cosgrove added, “Although I cannot direct the editor of Salient to anything, he has full editorial independence, I will convey my displeasure at the lack of thought that clearly was displayed by this choice.”
International Officer, William Wu said, “This is offensive to many Chinese students’ and this offense could have been avoided. I have received a large number of complaints from Chinese students about this image, and I hope that Salient will apologise in this instance.”
