现在我对2008年提供的统计课程作一点介绍，希望对将来投身于统计学习的人有点帮助。

STATS 301 Statistical Programming and Modelling Using SAS

内容：这门课主要教我们用一些统计电脑软件去分析数据。其中用到的软件有SAS 。SAS是世界上最受欢迎的商业统计软件,基本上以后那些商业公司找统计分析员，都会要求用SAS的。在SAS的部分里，你们会学到处理数据(database manipulation), 模拟运行（simulation）, 统计模型（statisticalmodelling）等等。08年开始，301加入了新内容，比较贴近“modelling”这部分

推荐（1-5）： 5 。如果你就想拿一个BSc然后毕业的话，301是一个很好的选择。正如我所说的，商业世界里基本用SAS做统计分析（还有SPSS，但是我们不学），301恰好介绍了SAS的基本用法，为以后找相关工作打基础。

适合人群：有computer science 基础的人，还要带有相关统计理论认识。
之前需要学的课目：统计208，210。

老师介绍：
2008AC : Dr. Andrew Balemi+Dr.Patricia Metcalf: 相信很多学了20x的人都认识Andrew了，他人很好，是marketing方面的专家，他是第一次参加到301的教学里，那么将会有更多的实际应用知识。Patricia在07summer创造了301历史上最简单的考试，不过历史该不会重演了。

STATS 302 Applied Multivariate Analysis
内容：统计多元分析，在这个世界里，没有什么是一样事情只被另一个因素影响的，影响的因素会很多。所以，我们需要做多元分析，但是多元分析很复杂，有独立的因素，还有非独立的因素，302就教你怎么去处理，是分析更加准确。

推荐（1-5）：4

适合人群：学生物的的。生物多样性(biodiversity)决定了做关于生物生态分析就要先做多元分析。
之前需要学的课目：统计208，这门课还需要一些线性代数(linear algebra)的知识，比如eigenvector, eigenvalue等等。
老师介绍：A/P Brian McArdle, 是一个很风趣地老师，上他的课应该不会打瞌睡。据闻302保持着stat历史上最高fail rate的记录。这么课的class tutor也是非常好的tutor。

STATS 310 Introduction to Statistical Inference
内容：统计理论介绍，这门课讲解关于很多经典统计的理论。

推荐（1-5）：4
合人群：学econometrics, statistical physics, finance, 还有需要继续深造统计的人。
之前需要学的课目：统计210，stage 2的数学，比如250，253

老师介绍：Prof Chris Triggs, 08年stat的HOD，人还算比较热情的。

STATS 320 Applied Stochastic Modelling
内容：随机建模，介绍用各种统计分布（distribution）模拟运行。比如模拟顾客排队（queuing）需要用的时间等等。需要用R或者Matlab做模拟运行分析。这个属于离散随即学(discrete stochastic)

推荐（1-5）：3

合人群：学economics, finance, biology, CS, maths，还是OR的必修。
之前需要学的课目：统计210, 数学250，或者253, 编程知识的课，比如CS, math 162。

老师介绍：这门会因为老师的不一样而反映不一样。这门课有3个老师教： Dr Geoffrey Prichard,估计是系里最聪明的人了，讲课沉闷，作业没什么问题，但是测验考试的题目会把人考得很郁闷。 A/P David Scott,他讲课很沉闷，但是据闻他的测验考试题是最简单的。 Dr Ilza Ziedins,她是一个很好的老师，上课还会有巧克力吃，而且讲的最不沉闷，她去年还拿了2005年的teaching award.

STATS 325 Stochastic Processes
内容：随机学，这属于连续随即学（continuous stochastic）,理论很多，不需要做模拟运行，问题都是理论的问题。

推荐（1-5）：3

合人群：学economics, finance, biology, CS, maths。

之前需要学的课目：统计210, 320 数学250，或者253,

老师介绍： Dr Rachel Fawster, 她也是一个很好的老师，很年轻，也很聪明，跟她上课会很开心。2004年teaching award 得主。
还有Dr Ilza Ziedins

STATS 326 Applied Time Series Analysis

内容：时间序列分析。

推荐（1-5）：4

合人群：economics, finance,

之前需要学的课目：stats 201/208, maths 108

老师介绍：Mike Forster, 相信一些学过208的人会知道他。

STATS 330 Advanced Statistical Modelling

内容：统计建模，有线性回归（linear regression）, 转线性回归(generalized linear model)

推荐（1-5）：5, 本科统计专业的推荐，和301并列，应为商业公司作统计分析多数作regression。

合人群：economics, finance, accounting, experimental or social science

之前需要学的课目：统计208
老师介绍：Prof Alan Lee, 系里教授，我没有听过他讲课，也没有听过什么回馈，不知道。

STATS 341 Design and Analysis of Surveys

内容：这个是属于问卷设计和分析。比如教你们对着一个城市几百万人，怎么只用访问1000人而得到比较有代表性的答案。

推荐（1-5）：5

合人群：marketing research, social science, operational management.

之前需要学的课目：统计208，210

老师介绍： Joss Cumming, 不错的女老师。

STATS 351 Design and Analysis of Experiments

内容：这个内容很难翻译，可以给一个例子。我们可以通过experimental design去分析各种因素对一个东西的影响。

推荐（1-5）：3，这门课很有用，但是本人觉得比较难明白

合人群：marketing research, experimental chemistry, experimental physics,experimental psychology，biological science, socialscience等等等等，基本上实验的数据都要靠experimental design 分析。

之前需要学的课目：统计208

老师介绍：Dr Arden Miller: 本人不喜欢他，因为他讲课也很沉闷。
Dr James Curran：统计鉴证学专家。

STATS 370 Financial Mathematics
内容：金融数学，学的东西有点像finance 361。

推荐（1-5）：5

合人群：fianance, economics

之前需要学的课目：统计 210 ，2xx数学，最好有finance 的基础，因为有什么options的认识。

老师介绍：Dr Wiremu Soloman: 系里最懒的老师，作业，测验，考试年年一样，就改数字，只要会做一以前的题，A+没有问题。

STATS 380 Statistical Computing

内容：这门课学的统计很广，有统计图示（statistical graphic）,计算方法（numerical technique）,统计编程（statistical programming）。
推荐（1-5）：3, 这门课是第一年，内容出自post grad的几课里面，难度有点高，而且图示那部分很抽象。

合人群：学CS的人。

之前需要学的课目：最好会Computer science

老师介绍：Dr Ross Ihaka : R 的发明人之一，相信是最聪明的毛利人了，他为学很严谨，所以判题也很严格。 Dr YongWang: 在301提过，也是一个很认真的人，作业量很多。Dr Paul Murrell:他负责图示部分，是统计图示届的牛人，人不错，出的作业不会很多，也不会很难。

ENGSCI 391 Optimization in Operations Research

内容：线性编程。需要会做VBA macro

推荐（1-5）： 2 如果你就想本科毕业，我劝你不要拿OR，因为没有什么实际用途，如果你想要转去MOR in engineering , 那就一定要读。

合人群：CS, maths

之前需要学的课目：编程相关的课程，而且非常需要！！！

老师介绍：Engineering science 的老师，如果是年轻的还好，有问题可以问，但是如果是那几个教授，那就惨了，他们根本不屑解答你们的问题。

好了，这些课程我大概都介绍了，还有不明白的，留言。最后一句，有心学好统计，向统计事业发展的，学好数学。如果只想本科毕业然后拉到的，不要学OR，学纯统计。如果想混学位而读统计的话，那要承受后果。统计很好混，但是要混出成绩很难。

这是难得的好tutor阿，不像很多assistance room和lab里面的tutor, assignment自己还没搞明白，只能拿着答案对着学生原话原说。还有tutorial给学生讲不明白的tutorial tutor.

如果你不去考test的话，就是说test 0%, exam最多可以70%.

How much overlap does stats 370 have with finance 351, 361 and 362? I am doing a finance major as well so I will definitely do it if there isn't much overlap, otherwise I guess I will choose something like stats301.

I haven't done commerce papers before and don't know too much about finance 351, 361 or 362. But I can say that you will learn a lot about SAS in 301. If you don't like programming and thinking in a statistical way, you will find 301 challenging. But it is definitely a good paper to have under your belt. I understood how crap the SAS language is when I was doing 301.

I haven't done any CS paper at this University before, and chances are I won't have enough slots to do 1 either, so if I do stats301 I will probably end up doing it without doing any CS papers.
I know finance 351 is about corporate finance, but from what I heard, that paper have lots of theory and very little maths, but finance 362 deals with pricing of options, forwards and other types of derivatives using things like Black–Scholes model and finance 361 deals with managing a portfolio (things like the efficient frontier etc) so I am a bit worried those might overlap with stats370.

EDIT: By the way, I thought the pre-requisite for stats301 is just stats20x? That's what I found from the stats website.

I'm not sure if 370 has Black-Scholes model in it or not. But I know STATS723 has Black-scholes model in it.

370 derives all option/future formular analytically and numerically.

In other words, Finance 361 tells you how to set up a risk-free,or low risk portfolio, and Finance362 tells you how to apply formular to work out the option values, and Stats370 shows you how those nice portfolio achieved and how we get those financial pricing model formular.

Yeah, that's true, it helps you in getting you an actuarial job. Even though there is nothing in CT1 that you have learnt in 370.

Just some comments:
- 325 is mostly on discrete time stochastic processes while 320 is mostly on queues, which are continuous time processes.
- 330: If one can go to the 330 website there are some recorded lectures for download. There you'll see how Alan teaches.
-351: In observational studies, you can only see the relationshipsbetween different variables, and you cannot infer causual relationshipsbetween them. To do so, however, you need to carefullycontrol the factors that potentially influence your results to see howit changes the variable of interest. In addition, one has totake into account any uncontrollable variations that would create biasto your results. How you should design your experiment andanalyse the data with these two things in mind are the main themes ofthis paper.

390我是学过了的。。但是我学完到现在都不知道自己学了什么更不用谈学到了什么以后能有什么用。。所以问问看萨米兄怎么感觉
