Under the Act, if an employee is enrolled in KiwiSaver, the employer is required to continue making compulsory employer contributions at the prescribed rate (currently 3% of gross salary/wages) unless:
The employee takes an approved savings holiday, or
The employee ceases employment with that employer
Since you state you remained employed in your permanent role, and did not take a savings holiday, your employer would have been legally obligated to continue making the required 3% contributions to your KiwiSaver account.

Your employee can join KiwiSaver if they’re living (or normally living) in New Zealand and they’re either:
a New Zealand citizen or entitled to be in New Zealand indefinitely
an Australian citizen
