An employee at a managed isolation hotel in Auckland has been sacked after a 20-minute “encounter” in the bedroom of a returnee in isolation.
After Stuff questions, MIQ confirmed the incident at the Grand Millennium hotel on January 7, with the head of MIQ, Brigadier Jim Bliss, describing it as “incredibly irresponsible and extremely disappointing”.

The incident happened when the hotel staff member went to make a delivery to the returnee’s room.
When he didn’t return promptly, the hotel manager sent the security manager to check and caught the staff member inside the bedroom.
The staff member was immediately sent home and told to self-isolate, then dismissed.

Asked if the encounter was sexual in nature, he said: “I didn’t enquire specifically into the nature of the encounter, but the fact it was a 20-minute encounter, it was long enough for me to be unacceptable.”
