Gmail users are reportedly experiencing issues worldwide.

google have several data centers in the world, it is not possible that all of them were down at the same time, plus there are backup plans.
if it returned with an authorized rejected email claiming there is no such an account, it could be the account server problem, such as LDAP server service failed.
cause the email system has its own traffic control mechanism, if an email can't be delivered to the destination server, either you got an instant failure reply email from the destination server or if it was an unsuccefully delivery the sender's server is going to hold the email temporally for a certain amount of time, in the meanwhile, the sender's server is going to resend the email several times.
