There is one community case of COVID-19 in New Zealand.
The infection has been caught early, Dr Ashley Bloomfield said on Sunday. The positive test result was returned on Saturday afternoon.
"I will run you through the entails but I will say from the outset that shows our systems to identify cases early are working. This case has been caught early and the risk of onward transmission is contained," he said.
He was tested on the day he developed symptoms, and all close contacts have been contacted and are self-isolating.
The man may have been infectious on Wednesday, October 14 and Thursday, October 15. On the Wednesday, the man was in New Plymouth working on a ship at the port. He checked into a local hotel and motel on two different evenings. The rooms are being deep-cleaned and it's believed there are no close contacts at the two establishments, Dr Bloomfield said.
People who had worked on the same New Plymouth vessel are being treated as close contacts. No one on board is symptomatic at this time.
The man returned to Auckland and was not at work on Thursday.
Dr Bloomfield noted that due to the man's profession, PPE such as a mask and gloves were in use during his shifts.
The man was not at the Ports of Auckland during his infectious period.
The testing centre followed all necessary protocols and no close contacts have been identified there.
