'Unprecedented' sentence for Auckland property developer who cut corners

Businessman Augustine Lau has been jailed for two years for cutting corners in property development in Auckland, the council says.

Lau pleaded guilty and was sentenced in the Auckland District Court on Wednesday, an Auckland Council statement said.

He was sentenced to two years imprisonment for breaches of the Resource Management Act and Companies Act.

Auckland Council said Lau faced 17 charges under the RMA and 10 charges under the Building Act, as well as further charges under the Companies Act.

He had undertaken illegal development of six properties in Auckland including Flat Bush, Pāremoremo and Ōtāhuhu, it said.

Auckland Council said the unprecedented sentence was a strong warning to others who would consider this type of offending.
