It comes down to whether you care about burning your bridge or not. NZ is a very small country, and most of the industries, everyone know everyone. Someone (a kiwi) came to my team for interview, gone through the process, and we offered him a job offer, he signed it, and 2 weeks later he came back and told us he has a better offer in company D, and he wouldn't join our team anymore.

I am fine with his decision, at the end of the day, it's his life, and his decision. However something he isn't aware of is the consequence of his decision:
- my team has the reputation in the country being the best of the best, more than half of the team members from the team in company D he's joining, wanted to work for me.
- He pretty much burn his bridge of ever being able to work for me (or my company ever again), and, also all my team members know which mean none of my team members will consider him either. When you think about it, the fact that people eventually do move on, you are going to end up having a lot of people in many different companies, which all will never consider you as a potential candidate, purely because you can't even keep a simple commitment that. What sort of person/work ethic other will perceived you as?

Obviously if you don't have plan to ever work for the first company you signed up for again in your life, it's not a big deal, just go for it and sign up to the better offer.

Just thought i should offer my perspective as a manager. good luck to you either way.

签了offer没来，作为雇佣者当然会感觉不爽。不是推荐和提倡这样，只是也不应该看得太重，甚至除了自己将他加入黑名单外也让公司或团队其他所有人将他加入黑名单，就更没必要了。

他还没来上班，接到其他更好的offer 去其他公司，其实这比来上班没多久再跳到其他公司，要好得多(对公司来说)。

其实这都只是商业行为，没什么好抱怨的。说commitment就有点搞笑了，公司要求个人对公司有commitment ，但公司对个人的commitment 呢？公司效益不好，或要缩减成本，或有更便宜的人工，随时都可以把任何一个人fire或redundant掉，这个时候还会说commitment吗？甚至公司对已经发出去的offer，也可能因为各种原因withdraw掉...

有更好机会的时候人往高处走很正常，在职的时候努力做事，交付高质量的产品或服务就行

确实有公司给了offer又撤掉的。。。我就见过有人跳槽拿了offer最后新公司把offer撤了，结果哥们尴尬的又只能求老公司留下来（这个offer可是签了字的结果突然什么原因职位没了），公司耍起流氓的时候也多了去了，他们才不管你什么情况哪怕你工作都辞了。。。
记得有句话说得好，you never get the job until you collect your first pay check. 所以即使签了offer也并不真是就代表你一定要在那上班，或者公司也一定就会雇你。其实再没来上班前双方反悔真没什么大不了的，尤其candidate反悔，这对公司是好事。

所以签了不去没啥，这种事情其实挺长见，尤其是employee market的时候。做为candidate永远选好的地方是人之常情。做为hiring manager也真没必要为这个事怨恨candidate,他如果真来上了几天然后再辞职不是更浪费大家时间？

至于圈子这个问题，也未必像上面说的那么危言耸听，尤其你是小兵的话过个个把年别人早把你忘了，再说了hiring manager也许到时候自己都跳了。这边圈子是不大，但是也绝不是所说的那么小（除非你不再奥克兰那倒是有可能），如果你有好的offer (薪水和职位都好的话），应该毫不犹豫选择更好的，然后好好的跟签合同的公司解释一下，大家都会理解的。

Well do not underestimate how much time and effort it takes, for employer to sift through 100 of CVs, shortlist them, interview them, reference check, MOJ & credit check, various clearance check etc etc.

Sure, i agree, as a staff, you will always go whether money/better career is. In my mind, putting your signature on a contract is a commitment of some form, you don't sign a piece of paper and then change your mind within weeks (sure feel free to do it, but in my book you are forever blacklisted).

it's probably different industry by industry. The domain i am in is a highly specialized field (that banks, major corporate, and government all know about someone like me), and many competitor companies want me to work for them, to help them build a team (including company D where the candidate has gone to after my offer).

Do not under estimate how long a bad taste can leave in people's mouth (even if you think you are only a small potato).

You are right that people do move on, imagine how far some of these bad stories can go when my team members eventually move to various corner in NZ? (my whole team was pissed off about that candidate and none will have good thing to say about him if anyone ever ask about him in the future).

Corporate的process确实是这样，所以corporate耍流氓（撤掉offer）的几率比较小。

其实candidate找工作也很不容易，面试，CV还有一颗忐忑不安的心，披荆斩棘才杀到最后一关，不是特殊原因也不会放弃的。主要很多时候，offer来的不是时候。相信每个人理想状态都想所有offer一起来，这样可以有多个选择可以放一起挑一个最好的。可是现实中因为很多公司的process,和各种原因造成的延误经常导致offer来的很不是时候。例如先面试的公司的offer却来的比后面试的公司的晚。

而且大多数公司出了offer都不会给你很久考虑的时间，2，3天可能都算多的了。。。（这也是公司占优势的地方，candidate基本都是无限等待，可是公司给了你offer就要你很快答复）。这时候如果不先签一个可能两个offer都会丢。。。所以大家都互相理解吧，像technerd说的当成商业行为就行了。

只能说那个倒霉的kiwi piss off the wrong guy了，如果是这么specialized的领域想必圈子也是很小，如果在得罪了比较有reputation的character，确实是个很不幸的事情。

看来这个人找工作自己也没做好功课。。。。。。。乱猜一下这个D comany是Datacom吗？

我当然知道招个合适的人不容易，这个过程中付出很多劳动。

但商业世界是看结果，不看过程的。
雇主付出很多劳动，给出的offer却比竞争对手给出的低不少，结果在收offer的一方看来就是这个雇主给的offer很没有诚意...

看结果适合雇佣过程任何一方，对技术人员也是，你再卖命，但分到的project做不出来，或者交付的速度太慢，或者质量太差，不管你多么努力，在公司干了多少年，老板都一样会把你开了。

I disagree what you said.

Can you remember what you did one month ago without lookuping up written notes? i.e. sep 8, 2016 People has short memory. That is the reason financial crisis always repeat on the same reason

I doubt your teammates can remember this person's name several years later and that person has not worked with your teammates for quite a long time.

i don't disagree that result driven is fair for both parties. What i hope people realize is, contract is a contract, and it's a commitment of some sort (yes you can resign a month later, but there's a process to follow), and i am hoping more and more people will think through what they want in career, why they want to join a certain company, which company can provide the most in terms of helping them achieve their career goal, rather than just change their mind a week later just because they have a slightly better offer $$$ wise. For people that are wanting to build a career, don't forget that it's your work ethic, personal drive and attitude that matters the most (and regretting what you have committed isn't something we should be encouraging/endorsing no matter how good their excuses are).

Candidate always have bargaining power to negotiate for more times before a decision is made (i don't know of any employers that really pushed for a decision within 5 days), obviously if employer has a lot of choices, it's up to their discretion whether they want to wait. Typically if candidate is being up front and says they need more time before they can make up their mind (whether they are waiting for 2nd offer or whatever), most companies wouldn't have a prob with it.

Something i do want to point out is, i am not trying to convince any of you my viewpoint is right, i am merely providing a different perspective to LZ how some employers might look at matter such as this. Everyone is entitled to do whatever they think it's best for their own career/life. Mine is just one example of one story that's related to LZ's story, and obviously how we react and how we look at this issue doesn't represent the whole NZ market.

wanna guess how much i actually care whether people agree/disagree with me? :P

I didn't get to where i am today by having everyone agreeing with me, what make this world interesting is, we all human have our own mind and decision and we react differently under different situation, and depends on environment and luck, our decision quite often dictate where we get to in life.

And re your example of whether i can remember what i did a month ago, of course i don't remember what i did a month ago, but you are using a pretty shit example. If you go in to office one day and a co-worker that you don't know their name spit at you and talk to you with some racial slur, do you walk away from that and would totally forget about that person a month later? I bet even 6 months later you can still remember the person's name and look and action (because negative experience always leave some impression that last).

I totally understand it from candidate's view point, i actually spend a lot of my personal time trying to help new immigrants (especially chinese) settle in this country, help guide him in terms of job hunting in IT, review their interview, and some i even go as far as doing interview simulation.

I am not saying my viewpoint is how the market will look at this particular same issue, however i do hope more people respect about a decision made (or signing a contract) though. Personally, putting your name and signature down on a piece of paper to commit in something isn't something that should be treated lightly, but nowadays people seem to think it's no big deal, just change your mind and get a divorce after marriage, just walk away from an accepted job offer, as "we" are the only important part of the puzzle, and we have to do everything to look after ourselves even if it means to screw over others/companies/partners? (ok ok, i know, i am probably over exaggerating :P)
