Geonet A 7.1 earthquake has hit northeast of Gisborne, and residents have been urged to evacuate to higher ground Civil Defence has issued a level two tsunami threat warning after a 7.1 earthquake hit off the coast of East Cape.
The 7.1 earthquake hit about 4.40am about 130km north-east of Te Araroa at 55km deep.
The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) issued a tsunami warning for East Coast of the North Island (including Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty) and Upper South Island.It advised the first tsunami activity had arrived, with a tsunami being generated, and would continue for several hours. People in the above/ coastal areas should:
1. Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities)
2. Stay off beaches and shore areas
3. Do not go sightseeing
4. Share this information with family, neighbours and friends
5. Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates
6. Follow instructions of local civil defence authorities
Civil Defence's warning said waves measuring 30cm high were measured at the East Cape and Great Barrier tide gauges.
Waves were expected to be observed for a couple of hours, it said.
GNS scientist Anna Keiser said the small wave detected at the East Cape Station could generate a tsunami.
"At this stage the 30cm is within the marine threat category and people should be vigilant," she said.......
