Hi,

My resident visa was granted in April 2013 and I am now in a dilemma. I got an offer from MIT and
my semester will start in Sep 2016. I love New Zealand, but I know if I don't get the citizenship now, I
would probably end up stay in the US and become a citizen there.

Could you please tell me if there is any chance I can explain the situation to the Department of Internal Affairs and potentially get my New Zealand citizenship earlier?

of course you can. Now the question is, tell me how speical you are? for instance, you can play for New Zealand in Rio Games, or what else so "special", super rich?

Hi thanks. You are right. Someone just contacted me and provided some helpful advice. Like you said, I have to convince them How I can be an unique asset and make contribution to our country. Although it is not guaranteed, it is always good to give it a try. I am a currently a third year student major in mathematics and has made a proposal for finding the diameter of the smallest element in the universe and the proof of the existence of such an element using one of the elementary formula in calculus. It can be a breakthrough if succeed. I consider it as a potential contribute to our country. I will give it a try anyway. Wish me luck.

just try but I doubt it would be a positive result from internal affairs. please do come back and let us know if you are exceptional to be granted NZ citizenship.

Hi

Thank you for your question.

Your concern is rather preference based than under any "special circumstances" defined by the Citizenship Act.

Your offer from MIT is also irrelevant when considering your citizenship application.

Both NEw Zealand and the United States recognise dual citizenship therefore I do not see the reason why you cannot apply for the US citizenship while also waiting for the required waiting period for NZ citizenship.
