Power companies tell Fair Go they are concerned people may be taken in by fake callers demanding immediate payment for an overdue bill.
The scam seems very active in Christchurch lately and the power companies are telling Fair Go at various times a man and a woman have been falsely claiming they represent Meridian Energy, Contact Energy, Mighty River Power, or Genesis Energy.
The callers appear to have no idea if the person they’re calling really is a customer of the company they falsely claim to represent, but they must be convincing because there are reports of people giving out details of credit cards, debits cards and online banking logins and losing thousands of dollars.
