Did you know you should flush your taps each morning to get rid of any traces of metal in the water?
The Christchurch City Council has taken out public notices urging residents in the city and on Banks Peninsula to flush their taps in line with Ministry of Health's recommendations.
The advice applies nationwide.
The ministry is concerned that some plumbing fittings potentially allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water left in the fittings for several hours. The metals most commonly found are lead, nickel, cadmium, copper and antimony.
''The health risk is low,'' Canterbury's Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said.
''However, we recommend flushing a small amount of water from your drinking tap each morning, or after you've been away from your property, to remove any metals that may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings.''
According to the Ministry of Health's website water with safe levels of metals can be obtained by flushing a small volume of water - 500ml - from the cold tap before water is drawn for drinking, cooking, or brushing your teeth.
The council is suggesting residents use that water to either water their plants or wash their dishes.
