Three people are lucky to be alive after the car they were travelling in smashed into a post and rail fence, Matamata police say.
A post smashed through the windscreen of the car, narrowly missing the driver, who had fallen asleep behind the wheel.
The car had been heading east on State Highway 29, near the intersection with State Highway 1, on Sunday.
When the front-seat passenger realised the driver had fallen asleep, he shouted. The driver woke up and swerved hard to the left.
The car skidded across the grass and gravel, then crossed back over the centre-line, slamming into a fence.
A rail from the fence was forced through the windscreen and out the rear window, causing moderate injuries to a passenger sitting in the back seat. She was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance.
Sergeant Graham McGurk said it was a reminder of the dangers of driving while tired.
really - what is "a car crossing back over" like? If you hang a violent left, your butt is gonna thrown right, you are gonna skid for a while in broadside at an angle to the center-line. You know u overreacted and have to steer all the way back to stay straight on the course. So you hang a cute right, then how could ur car end up crossing back over the center line??
