An area off the east coast of the North Island has been highlighted in new research that identifies where giant earthquakes - greater than magnitude 8.6 - are most likely to strike.
A team of scientists, led by Associate Professor Wouter Schellart from Melbourne's Monash University, have developed a new global map of subduction zones - which occur at the edge of tectonic plates - to predict which ones are capable of generating giant earthquakes.
The research doesn't go into tsunamis which are generally generated following massive undersea quakes.
Most earthquakes occur at the boundaries between the tectonic plates that cover the earth's surface.
However, the largest earthquakes only occur at subduction zones, where one plate sinks below the other.
The Hikurangi-southern Kermadec subduction segment, which lies as close as 80km off the east coast of the North Island, has been identified as an area with a high probability of generating a giant earthquake of magnitude 8.6 or greater.
The subduction segment forms the southern part of the Tonga-Kermadec-Hikurangi subduction
zone, where the Pacific plate sinks below the Australian plate.
The research, published in the journal Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, identifies other areas capable of producing giant earthquakes, including South America, Indonesia, Japan and Alaska.
Recent giant earthquakes include the devastating magnitude 9 quake that hit Japan in 2011, generating a massive tsunami.
On Boxing Day 2004, a magnitude 9.1 quake struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, triggering a tsunami that left more than 200,000 people dead in areas surrounding the Indian Ocean.

东区那边的东海岸岂不是危险了, 海拨只有2-3米. 也没有类似rangitoto island那样的岛帮助减缓海啸
