It is expected to be prevalent for the next three years, and in that time could affect more than 100,000 people in New Zealand.
"It's very difficult to avoid unless you live in a bubble but the key thing is when you've got it try not to give it to anyone," he said.
"Don't go to work, don't visit hospitals, old people's homes or childcare centres. Quarantine yourself near a bathroom because you're going to have vomiting and diarrhoea, the vomit will also pass on the virus so when people clean it up they need to protect themselves.
