Markets flat in uneventful trading
Markets closed pretty much unchanged, in a night that bought little in
the way of major data releases or changes in trends. The release of
Eurozone M3 money supply figures for Sept showed a contraction of
Euro30 bln, dashing hopes of a quick recovery from recession and
giving a clear message to the ECB that some real quantitative needs
to be undertaken to try and boost growth. There was some positive
news, with GDP data showing that the UK had bounced back from
recession with growth in the Sept quarter up by 1% ….expect a pause
in the BOE quantitative easing programme. European stocks were
mixed with the STOXX50 down 0.29%, FTSE100 unchanged, DAX
0.10% higher with Gold reversing several days of declines to be up
$11 at US$1,713.20/oz. US equities initially traded higher but later in
the session retraced some of the gains on mixed earnings results and
nervousness’ over tonight’s Q3 GDP report..the DOW finished 0.20%
higher, S&P500 0.30% ahead and NASDAQ up 0.15%.
Currencies were largely unchanged, although several of the “risk”
currencies rose in early trading .The Euro made a high of US1.3022
but failed to hold this level and opens back around US1.2945, we
expect it to finish the week within the last days range. The GBP had a
good night on the back of the better than expected GDP figures,
climbing to a 3-week high against the USD at 1.6140.
The AUD rose to high of US1.0392 but was sold back down in the US
session to US1.0330 and with no data due today, expect any moves
to come from offshore but unlikely to see a break below US1.0330.
The NZD outperformed, trading up to US0.8240 but has slid lower on
the open currently at 0.8175 …the new RBNZ Governor is speaking
this morning, but expect any weakness to fund good buying support
around the 0.8150/60 level which should hold for the weeks end.
