I remember the whole thing as if it happened (were) yesterday. 问题：为什么不用had happened。国内银行上班的朋友问我的问题。我彻底不知道，我给他的解释：我们都这么说，没什么好解释的。亲们，我这就算应付过去了吗，他会不会觉得我在蒙他，我真的不知道

It just depends where you are placing yourself in relation to the sequence of events, and the time scale you are using.

For example:
Present: ... nobody says anything about it anymore, as if it never happened.
Past: ... nobody said anything about it anymore, as if it had never happened.

Placing the whole thing in the past:
I remembered the whole thing as if it had happened yesterday.
