I feel this may worth your time to read. If you seriously consider a career in the accounting profession, you will inevitably (and unfortunately) to get one professional qualification. So what are the differences and which one you should take? This is a question only you can answer.
[ZT]CPA (Certified Practicing Accountants) vs. CA (Chartered Account)
Long story shot: CPA exams are all multiple choice whilst CA exams are all written
CA (either the OZ version or the NZ version, similar story):
Reputation: Prestigious
Region: Well recognised in western countries, (Europe, Canada, US, etc)
Course: very structured, 6 compulsory units, IT IS DIFFICULT (if you thought some uni subjects are hard, they are nothing to what you will be doing in CA), weekly lectures, tutorial, as well as group assignments and exam.
Duration: 1 subject per semester, 3 semesters per year, therefore you can complete it in 2 years if you enrol every semester.
Bottom-line: This is the one to go for if you are willing to go the extra yard to stand out from the crowd, but expect many late nights of studying.
CPA – this is different from CPA in China or USA which is equivalent as CA in Australia:
Reputation: More basic
Region: Well recognised in Asia and south East Asia. But for this purpose, you can also do ACCA which is more recognisable since it is from UK...
Course: 4 compulsory subjects, 3 electives (course contents recently changes, before there are only 3 core subjects), no classes, no assignments, just 1 exam per subject (mostly multiple choice)
Duration: up to 3 subjects per semester, 2 semesters per year, you can complete in 1 year if you like (but there is a 3 year work experience requirement before you qualify for the license)
Bottom-line: Easy to complete, practical experiences are usually required.
