The body of a woman in her 40s found in the Wellington suburb of Mt Victoria will likely be removed by tonight.
Detective Inspector Paul Basham said police were alerted to the discovery at the top of a track which leads from Wellington College to Alexandra Park on Mount Victoria at about 11am, after a member of the public noticed the body.
Police have cordoned off surrounding tracks and set up a tent as a team of experts conduct a scene examination.
It was still too early to say whether the death was suspicious and a post-mortem would be conducted once the body had been removed.
"We're trying to figure out what happened."
Mr Basham would not say how far off the track the body was but described the terrain as rugged.
Anyone with any information or who noticed any suspicious activity in the area in the past 24 hours is asked to contact police.
