I am learning Mandarin as a hobby. I am just a very beginner. My first language is English.

In Chinese, 小丑 means clown and it not a good name. Is it given by your friend or you pick it up yourself?

At least many people want to get their English level enhanced by communicating with you. That is the main intention. You won't avoid being regarded as a girlfriend candidate because that could bring many conducive aspects ie much better social status, honour or poor personal happiness... Please don't limit welcoming friends from New Lynn and Auckland CBD only. There are more with good character in wider area. You must differentiate.

Just give you some tips:

In China, we have heaps of Languages. The most formal one is called "Mandarin" (search "Pu tong hua" from google.) [if you learn Mandarin, you would be understand by most places of Mainland China and Tai Wan]

Another one call "Cantonese" (search"guang dong hua" from google) [if you learn Cantonese, you will be only understand by the region, such as Guangdong, Guangxi and HongKong]

Make sure which Language you try to learn, because they're totally different languages.

Do not use Google translate for sentence, unless you understand pretty much basic knowledge of Mandarin.

However, you can use google as translator for single word.
