6. It isn't wise to tow a dinghy in a seaway, especially not with your expensive outboard strapped to the transom. Imagine the headache if it flips.
7. Ensure you carry the proper tools--crescents, spanners and screw drivers in particular--for every contingency, and carry essential spares such as belts and filters. Could you change a fuel filter and bleed your diesel engine at sea?
8. If you are thinking about reefing, you probably should have reefed already.
9. Fasten fenders to a yacht's stanchion bases or toerail, not the lifelines as doing so kinks and weakens the wire.
10. If you need to siphon fuel from a tote tank or drum, poke another short piece of hose into the container, seal the hole with a rag, and blow. The rise in pressure inside the container will force fuel to flow out of the pipe into your fuel tank without you getting a mouthful.
