New Zealanders believe Asians face more discrimination than any other race.
That is prompting the Race Relations Commissioner to call for action, such as having more Asians on television and on school boards .
Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres says some of the reasons Asians face challenges are historic.
“By and large they are the most recent, significant group of migrant and they have settled fairly largely in Auckland. There are some historical routes of discrimination, both against Chinese and Indian in New Zealand,” said Mr de Bres.
For the fifth year running, three quarters of respondents in a survey for the Race Relations Commission believe Asians face most prejudice.

A new survey has found that Asians are the ethnic group most discriminated against here in New Zealand.
Asian community leaders say they suffer anything from slurs about their driving skills, to being denied employment and, in extreme cases, violent attacks.
Auckland is one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world and Asians are the second biggest ethnic group in the city, making up almost 20 percent of the population.
“We need to shift our heads to see Asian people in New Zealand not as foreign or other – they’re us,” says Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres.
The new survey, released as part of a human rights commission report, shows 75 percent of respondents believe Asians suffer a "great deal" or "some" discrimination.
“I think the majority of the Asian population is new to New Zealand. And they’re relatively new to New Zealanders, so I think that’s what we’ve got to work on - making more connections,” says Mr De Bres.
A number of racially motivated crimes which occurred in the past year are also outlined in the report.
At an Invercargill service station, a Chinese student was the subject of racial slurs, before being attacked while in Christchurch, a Filipino man and Japanese student had dogs set on them with the owner saying he wanted to make a statement about immigrants.
In Nelson, two Thai women were verbally abused then assaulted, and in New Plymouth, an Indian family had their car attacked with a machete.
But Chinese community leader Arthur Loo says most discrimination is on a much smaller scale.
“There’s a widely held view that Asian drivers are a little bit erratic, but if you come from overseas and see the way New Zealanders at large drive, it’s pretty frightening,” says Mr Loo.
In the last year, the Human Rights Commission was approached almost 500 times regarding race matters, with the most common complaint related to discrimination at work and a number also saying they are bullied because of their race.
他们口中称土地是他们的,但实际他们已经是没有实权了,他们就一直讲着那个条约,that's the only thing they could put on the table. 而白人又已经很反感了,我不止一次听到白人说他们太贪得无厌了,commit crime and live on the benefit。其实在这社会中。白人是歧视毛利人的。作者: 陌生的香港人 时间: 2012-2-12 10:47:00
