This weekend you can Skype, Google, YouTube, game and download as much as you want. It's all unmetered, so whatever data you use is free.
It's our first-ever Free Broadband Weekend for all of our home broadband customers. It starts at 6pm Friday December 2 and goes right through until midnight Sunday December 4.
I'm a Telstra customer and will be away with friends all weekend but I'm going to leave several huge downloads ready to go.
It sucks that Telecom probably can't do this so easily; they have a much larger network which is more copper based than fibre based. Still, they might!
I called up Telstra because I had a few questions. I talked to a guy named Gary.
First, how bad did they expect the slowdown to be? "We are confident that the network will cope with whatever we throw at it." Basically nothing serious, he said; as always, if everyone visited the same international server we might see some slowdown there.
Were they planning on throttling any type of data, p2p etc, or slowing down any users who are using loads of data? Gary said they were basically letting it run."We have no slowdown. There are no roadblocks."
I asked if I should be conservative in my usage or go crazy, i.e. let them know they should do this again or take advantage of it. "Whatever people want to do."
I noted their ad said "first" free weekend. Did this imply more were to come, maybe at off-peak times? "We don't know at the moment, but we are looking at all sorts of things to make broadband much more exciting. We have a very creative team."
On a different note, I asked him if they had seen Netflix's concern with NZ internet and wondered if they had ever considered partnering with them, maybe to cache content so it could be usage free? He didn't know himself, but they were "happy to consider working with any company, any way we can make broadband more exciting for New Zealanders."
What do you guys plan on doing with the unlimited data? If you have Telstra Clear, that is. Are you even excited, or are you just pissed off that some things might go slow? Someone on Twitter joked that it could be trap for copyright infringement. Damn
