Indicator buildings in the Christchurch central city will be inspected this morning following this morning's large aftershock.
The magnitude 5.1 shake struck at 5:39am this morning, and was situated 40 kilometres west of Christchurch at a depth of 12 kilometres.
Emergency services haven't received any reports of injury or damage from the shake which was close to the Greendale fault, the epicentre of September's quake.
GNS Duty Seismologist Caroline Holden says it's unlikely to have caused any damage.
"This one was actually one of the aftershocks of the earlier earthquakes we had last September, the Darfield earthquake," she told Newstalk ZB. "It was very close to Greendale which was near the epicentre of the September earthquake."
The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority will look at its main indicator buildings inside the central city red zone this morning.
