Requirements for a permanent resident visa
You must:
1. hold a resident visa, or have held one in the last • three months
2. hold, or have held, that resident visa for at least • two years continuously
3. have met any conditions that your resident visa was • subject to under section 49(1 of the Immigration Act
4. have met one of the five commitments to New Zealand • criteria set out below.
1. You have spent enough time in New Zealand
You have been in New Zealand as a resident for a total of 184 days or more in each of the two 12-month portions of the 24 months immediately preceding your permanent resident visa application. You may get the Unemployment Benefit if you are not in full-time work.
You must be:
available for, and looking for full time work
18 years old or over (or 16-17 if you are married or in a civil union or in a de facto relationship and have one or more children you support).
You must also (unless you are in hardship):
be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident
have lived in New Zealand for at least 2 years at any one time since becoming a New Zealand citizen or resident (unless you are a refugee).
You should also normally live in New Zealand and intend to stay here.
You may still qualify if you are a full-time trainee on an approved work related course (usually less than 12 weeks) and looking for work.

A sponsor must undertake to ensure that financial support and accommodation is provided to you, if necessary, for at least your first 5 years as a resident in New Zealand.
