Austrilian red wine is better . Depends how much you want to spend. Wolf Blass Yellow label is good(compare with the price $10 when it is on sale) Shiraz is drier and Merlot is sweeter and easier to drink (specially for girls). Penfold BIN 28 year 2005 is good but more expensive (year 2008 is alright too)
still the brand Wolf Balss president is good $16 when it is on sale. Rose Mount reserved is good but the normal one is not.
New Zealand White wine is fine . White cliff . not expensive, but alright server chilled.
