The problems that I have come across, had two mk4s, the first one is Tiptronic, end up with transmission problem.
Bought the second one, manual one, drives really good. Had water leaking into the footwell during winter time, took a bit effort to find out where the water from, easily fixed. Then oil leaking from engine, spend total of $800 to get the problem fixed, lucky got most of it covered by insurance.
Another common problem will be the MAF, my one hasn't totally break down, but I can feel the problem already.
It's a great and firm car to drive, comfortable, stereo is great, a lot of fun with a manual turbo engine. However, when it comes to any repairs and services, prepare to take some big money from your pocket. Suggest you buy mechanical insurance.

2004, cars always have problems, it's just whether you notice it or not, and they could be major ones or minors ones which don't need urgent attention immediately.
